Pont Du Gard was built in 1st century AD by Marcus Agrippa, the creator is not certain but most places say it was Marcus Agrippa. Pont Du Gard is made mostly made out of soft yellow limestone blocks. The highest part of the structure is made from breeze stone which are joined together with mortar. These are topped with stone slabs covered in calcium deposits to bear the water channel.
The purpose of Pont Du Gard was to supply and send drinking water and water to public baths, from an aqueduct. Eventually the water quality started deteriorating and it could not be used to drink of bathe in, so it was just there to mark roman territory and show what they could build.
Pont Du Gard's significance today is that it showed how arches can be used as a new technique to create structures and the way the stones were combined to hold and withstand water channels. The bridge technique had not been surpassed for over a thousand years. Today it is used as a toll bridge
