Forum Romanum
A forum is at the center of a roman city, it was a public place where political, religious, social, commercial and other activities occurred. The main forum in the city of Rome was the forum Romanum, it was placed right in the center of the city.
Originally the forum was a sewer (one of the world earliest sewer systems), built by Tarquin Kings in 600 BC it was called the Cloaca Maxima. It was built because the valley between Palatine, Capitoline and Esquiline hills were too marshy so a sewer was built to drain water to the Tiber river. With the land properly drained and dry, it became a good meeting area. When the roman republic cam on 509 BC it was used for political matters and eventually the roman senate gathered there. The forum had many temples, basilicas and arches, such as triumphal arches, the temple of Saturn, Basilica Aemilia, Temple of Vesta and many more. Some temple have been re-built often so they are not sure how old some may be.
The original purpore of Forum Romanum or Cloaca Maxima was to be a sewer system for marshlands, but later on when the ground was dry it became a forum/meeting area for the roman's.
The significance of Forum Romanus is that it has many temples and arches, it teaches us about roman triumphs and victories and how they praised gods. Also it was the main meeting place of the senate, so many elections and prosecutions were held there showing us how their political system worked compared to ours.
